Product details description

Fire escapes are critical safety infrastructure. The flooring material must provide grip in all weather conditions and support the weight of evacuees and rescue personnel. Chequered plate (diamond pattern) is the industry standard.

  Slip Resistance

The raised diamond pattern disrupts the contact surface of a shoe. Even when wet or covered in snow, the edges of the diamonds dig into the sole of a boot, providing a friction coefficient significantly higher than flat steel. This is vital during panic evacuations where people run fast.

  Structural Integrity

Fire escapes are often cantilevered (supported only at one end). Chequered plates are stiffer than flat sheets of the same thickness because the pattern acts as a series of stiffeners. This reduces deflection (bouncing) when crowded.

  Durability and Fire Rating

Galvanized Steel: The most common. The zinc coating protects against rust. However, in extreme heat (fire), the zinc layer burns off, but the steel retains structural integrity up to 400°C.

Aluminum: Lighter, used where weight is a concern (e.g., retrofitting old buildings). It melts at a lower temperature (660°C) but is non-combustible.

Stainless Steel: Used in coastal areas or high-end buildings for maximum corrosion resistance.

  Installation

Plates must be welded securely to the stringers. Open-mesh grating is sometimes used, but chequered plates are preferred for fire escapes because they prevent heels from getting stuck and provide a solid surface for stretchers.
